Novena to Saint Rita Saint of the Impossible

O HOLY PATRONESS of those in need, St. Rita, whose pleadings before thy Divine Lord are almost irresistible, who for thy lavishness in granting favors hast been called the Advocate of the Hopeless and even of the Impossible; St. Rita, so humble, so pure, so mortified, so patient and of such compassionate love for thy Crucified Jesus that thou couldst obtain from Him whatsoever thou askest, on account of which all confidently have recourse to thee, expecting, if not alwavs relief, at least comfort; be propitious to our petition, showing thy power with God on behalf of thy suppliant; be lavish to us, as thou hast been in so many wonderful cases, for the greater glory of God, for the spreading of thine own devotion, and for the consolation of those who trust in thee. We promise, if our petition is granted, to glorify, thee by making known thy favor, to bless and sing thy praises forever. Relying then upon thy merits and power before the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we pray:

By thy heroic sufferings during thy married life,

By the consolation thou didst experience at the conversion of thy husband,

By the sacrifice of thy children rather than see them grievously offend God,

By thy severe penances and thrice daily bloody scourgings,

By the suffering caused by the wound thou didst receive from the thorn of thy Crucified Saviour,

By the divine love which consumed thy heart,

By that remarkable devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, on which alone thou didst exist for four years,

By the happiness with which thou didst part from thy trials to join thy Divine Spouse,

By the perfect example thou gavest to people of every state of life.

Pray for us, 0 holy St. Rita, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

The Life of Saint Rita

For centuries St. Rita of Cascia (1381-1457) has been one of the most popular saints in the Catholic Church. She is known as the "Saint of the Impossible" because of her amazing answers to prayers, as well as the remarkable events of her own life.

St. Rita wanted to become a nun, but in obedience to her aged parents, she married. Her husband caused her much suffering, but she repaid his cruelty with prayer and kindness. In time he was converted, becoming considerate and God-fearing. But St. Rita was to undergo another great sorrow when her husband was murdered.

St. Rita then found that her two sons were entertaining thoughts of avenging their father's murder. She feared they would put their desires into effect in accord with the evil custom of the Vendetta. With heroic love for their souls, she begged God to take them from this life rather than allow them to commit this great sin. Not long afterward they both died, after preparing themselves to meet God.

Bereft of spouse and children, St. Rita devoted herself to prayer, penance and works of charity. After a time she applied for admittance to the Augustinian Convent in Cascia. She was refused, but after praying to her three special patron saints ­ St. John the Baptist, St. Augustine and St. Nicholas of Tolentino ­ she miraculously entered the convent and was allowed to remain. This took place around the year 1411.

In the convent, St. Rita's life was marked by great charity and severe penances. Her prayers obtained for others remarkable cures, deliverance from the devil and other special favors from God.

So that she might share in the pain of His Crown of Thorns, Our Lord gave St. Rita a thorn wound in her forehead. It was very painful and gave off a disagreeable odor, yet she considered it a very great grace. She prayed, "O loving Jesus, increase my patience according as my sufferings increase." The wound lasted the rest of her life.

St. Rita died on May 22, 1457 at the age of 76. People flocked to the convent to pay their last respects. Innumerable miracles took place through her intercession, and devotion to her spread far and wide.

St. Rita's body was preserved perfectly incorrupt for several centuries, and at times it gave off a sweet fragrance. At the beatification ceremony, the body of the Saint raised itself up and opened its eyes.

O GOD, Who in Thine infinite tenderness hast vouchsafed to regard the prayer of Thy servant, Blessed Rita, and dost grant to her supplication that which is impossible to human foresight, skill and efforts, in reward of her compassionate love and firm reliance on Thy promise, have pity on our adversity and succor us in our calamities, that the unbeliever may know Thou art the recompense of the humble, the defense of the helpless, and the strength of those who trust in Thee, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Santa de lo Imposible. Oh Santa Patrona de los necesitados, Santa Rita, cuyas plegarias ante el Divino Señor son casi irresistibles, quien por la generosidad en otorgar favores has sido llamada Mediadora de los sin esperanza e incluso de lo Imposible; Santa Rita, tan humilde, tan pura, tan mortificada, tan paciente y de tan compasionado amor por Jesus Crucificado que podrias obtener de El cualquier cosa que le pidas. A cuenta de esto recurrimos confiados a ti, esperando, si no siempre alivio, al menos consuelo. Se favorable a nuestra peticion, mostrando el poder de Dios a nombre de este/a suplicante, se generosa con nosotros, como lo has sido en tantos casos maravillosos, para la mas grande gloria de Dios, por la divulgacion de tu propia devocion, y por el consuelo de aquellos que confian en ti. Prometemos, si nuestra peticion es concedida, glorificar tu nombre, informando del favor concedido, para bendecir y cantar tus alabanzas por siempre. Confiando entonces en los meritos y poder ante el Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, te rogamos:

Oh Dios, Quien en tu infinita ternura has sido bondadoso para escuchar la plegaria de Tu sierva, Santa Rita, y otorgas a su suplica lo que es imposible a la vista, conocimiento y esfuerzos, en recompensa de su compasionado amor y firme confianza en Tu promesa, ten piedad en nuestra adversidad y socorrenos en nuestras calamidades, que el no creyente pueda saber que Tu eres la recompensa del humilde, la defensa de los sin esperanza, y la fuerza de aquellos que confian en Ti, a traves de Jesucristo, nuestro Señor. Por siglos Santa Rita de Cascia (1381-1457) ha sido una de las Santas mas populares en la Iglesia Catolica. Ella es conocida como la " Santa de lo Imposible " por sus impresionantes respuestas a las oraciones, como tambien por los notables sucesos de su propia vida.
Santa Rita queria ser monja, pero por obedecer a sus padres, se caso. Su esposo le causo muchos sufrimientos, pero ella devolvio su crueldad con oracion y bondad. Con el tiempo el se convirtio, llegando a ser considerado y temeroso de Dios. Pero Santa Rita tuvo que soportar un gran dolor cuando su esposo fue asesinado.
Santa Rita descubrio despues que sus dos hijos estaban pensando en vengar el asesinato del padre. Ella temia que pusieran sus deseos en efecto de acuerdo con la maliciosa costumbre de la Venganza. Con un amor heroico por sus almas, ella le suplico a Dios que se los llevara de esta vida antes de permitirlos cometer este gran pecado. No mucho tiempo mas tarde ambos murieron despues de preparse para encontrarse con Dios.
Sin su esposo e hijos, Santa Rita se entrego a la oracion, penitencia y obras de caridad. Despues de un tiempo ella aplico para ser admitida al Convento Agustiniano en Cascia. Ella no fue aceptada, pero despues de orarle a sus tres especiales santos patronos - San Juan Bautista, San Agustin y San nicolas de Tolentino - milagrosamente entro al convento y fue permitida a quedarse. Esto sucedio alrededor del año 1411.
En el convento, la vida de Santa Rita fue marcada por su gran caridad y severas penitencias. Sus oraciones obtuvieron para otros, curas notables, liberacion del demonio y otros favores especiales de Dios.
para que ella pudiera compartir en el dolor de Su Corona de Espinas, Nuestro Señor dio a Santa Rita una herida de espina en su frente. Fue muy dolorosa y expelia un olor desagradable, pero ella lo considaraba una gracia divina. Ella oraba "Oh amado Jesus, aumenta mi paciencia en la medida que aumentan mis sufrimientos". La herida duro por el resto de su vida.
Santa Rita fallecio un Mayo 22, 1457 a la edad de 76 años. La gente se agolpo al convento a pagar sus ultimos respetos. Innumerables milagros tuvieron lugar a traves de su intercesion, y la devocion hacia ella se extendio a lo largo y a lo ancho. El cuerpo de Santa Rita fue conservado perfecto por varios siglos, y a veces daba una fragrancia dulce. En la ceremonia de beatificacion, el cuerpo de la Santa se elevo y abrio sus ojos.
Dios ha escuchado las oraciones de Santa Rita por otros en innumerables ocasiones, y ciertamente ella estara feliz de inteceder una vez mas, a nombre de aquellos que le ruegan a ella ahora - para continuar percibiendo la verdad de su gran nombre.
